Diet, etc

Posted on February 11, 2009. Filed under: Other |

So yesterday, I thought to myself, why not upgrade my soft diet and move on to something more solid. What a mistake that was! I took a bite out of a banana and felt so much pain with my incisors that I had to take a few minutes to recover from the pain. I guess I’m not yet ready to start masticating the old fashioned way. It typically takes a little over 2 weeks to fully heal from the pain(I’m barely into a week and half).

So far, since the surgery, my diet has been semi-solid. And for my fruits (mainly bananas), I mash them (picture below) and sometimes add that mush to my breakfast which is either Oat Bran or Oatmeal (juiced with raw eggs,  2% Dairy Milk, and Silk Soy Milk). To top that, I add a heaping spoonfull of Blueberry preserves. For desert, I drink a full glass of orange juice. So that’s my attempt to get a well balanced breakfast that is also high on Calcium and Vitamin D. As we all know, those are the leading nutrients for bone regeneration, and in these first few weeks of Wilckodontics/AOO, I need to increase my Calcium and Vitamin D intake so everything will go according to plan.

I’ve stopped taking my pain medication full time now to get my pain threshold even higher. That is not to even mention the nightmares I’ve been having since this all started, to which I’m told is a side effect of the pain-killer I’m using. So far, so good, I’m doing just fine with managing the pain as long as I don’t have to talk or eat or clean my mouth.

In other related news, I stumbled upon a blog of another patient undergoing the same procedure (http://wilckodontics.wordpress.com). It’s good to see that blogs are beginning to pop up about this procedure. I was concerned about the dearth of information, especially of personal experience stories, out there on the Internet. That is one of the other reasons why I got motivated to start this blog.

So, all is well, and hopefully all is going good on the cellular level.

Housekeeping notes:
Next week – Feb 16 – Visit to the Oral Surgeons for removal of stitches.
Feb 17 – Visit to Ortho for a new wire to be placed on the brackets of the braces.
Feb  18 – Visit to Periodontist for cleaning. I think I may have to reschedule this one. Not quite sure if I’d be able to handle the pain.
